The Jolly Anglers, Reading RG1 3EA

open-mic hosted by Tony Brown

"Hope, Doubt, Bitterness, Regret, and then American Pie."

Last night I thought that I should start with Something Wild and mention the radio ad in which the song appears and the festival it advertises. I then thought we'd have a bit of self-deprecation with respect to my musical ability and point out that in fact the music for Love You To Death is exactly the same as Something Wild. (I need to write the story about how that came about at some point - it wasn't premeditated or as a result of laziness.) Earlier it occurred to me that perhaps if the song order was swapped, its sequence would describe the arc of many love affairs so it seemed only natural to follow with an angry, bitter song and then one of regret and sadness. Who says these sets aren't structured? (:-)

Unexpectedly, I was called upon to finish the evening off with American Pie. And I think the evening was well and truly finished off as I felt like I was wildly out of tune. I don't know if that was because of my voice, or because my guitar was out, or because Claire and John had joined me on stage. Nevertheless we managed to get Pete and Carol up dancing so it can't have been a complete disaster (though it has to be said, they can dance to anything), and I think (hope) most enjoyed it.

As always, a very pleasant evening at The Jolly Anglers.
