Deja Vu, Reading, RG1 2LG

Bohemian Night open-mic hosted by Rob Sowden

"Clothes Maketh the Man?"

Good to be back at Deja Vu last night, although comically it coincided with the reappearance of "The Tommy Cooper of Rock": apparently the audience hadn't realised that my mic-stand had swung round so that by the end of the song I had ended up looking down the length of the bar rather than at my immediate audience but hey I'm a pro like that.

It was gratifying to get people up dancing straight away with You've Got The Magic Back although to be fair "the dancers" were so drunk that I'd have possibly achieved the same result with a speeded-up metronome. Playing American Pie was a little like pouring petrol on the fire to start with though perhaps the combination of playing the full seven-verse version of the song and the speed that I was playing at was a little too much for the situation and by the end, we'd all pretty much collapsed.

A very good evening with some great performances, particularly regular James Histead who seemed to have found a new found confidence - I thought his singing was extraordinary last night; newcomer keyboardist / singer-songwriter Maija Päivikki Cooper; and the newly besuited Luke Paulo. They say "clothes maketh the man", I don't know if it's the suit but there's a transformation taking place before our eyes, Luke's increased "presence" on stage last night was almost tangible.

My Set:

You've Got The Magic Back

Cold Heart

American Pie (Don McLean)
