The Jolly Anglers, Reading RG1 3EA

open-mic hosted by Tony Brown

"The Anglerettes"

I always imagined if ever I had some backing vocalists on stage it'd be three beautiful women with the voices of angels along the lines of Bryan Ferry's Angelettes. What do I get? Three burly (okay, "burly" in the loosest sense of the word) men (Andy Gingell, Roger Watson and John "The Landlord") now known collectively as "The Anglerettes".

It must have looked quite amusing having "The Father, Son and The Holy Ghost" plus me singing American Pie, but from the stage, seeing what seemed like the whole pub join in, either by dancing, singing, clapping and stomping, it felt pretty cool.

The whole evening was exceptional for the quality of acts and atmosphere. I hate to say it but if you weren't there, you missed out last night.

My Set:

Last Night I Saw You Standing There

Tears of a Clown (Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Hank Cosby)

American Pie (with the Anglerettes) (Don McLean)
